About the archive
About Folk Calm
A personal record of ordinary things done in Chinese kitchens, bedrooms, courtyards, and washrooms.
Why I Started This
Folk Calm began as a place to write down small household habits before they became too ordinary to notice: what was kept beside the stove, what came out when the weather changed, and how familiar objects moved through a day.
Some records begin with things I have seen at home. Others begin with an old object, a regional custom, or a written source. I separate those origins instead of inventing a family scene to make every article sound personal.
How the Notes Are Written
The site is written in the first person when the observation is mine. Historical background is identified as such. Household actions are described without turning a short public article into a complete formula; detailed measured preparations belong in the PDF editions.
Who I Am
I live in Chengdu and run Folk Calm as an independent project. I am interested in the domestic traditions that rarely enter textbooks: pantry ingredients, wash basins, bedding, reused cloth, and the repeated work of keeping a home.
I write and maintain the site myself. Corrections, source suggestions, and clearly identified family records are welcome at contact@folkcalm.com.
